Mosquitoes are one of the most disturbing part of having outdoor events during the summer months. With a water source and people as the food source, they are able to multiply rapidly and attack in swarms. From a health standpoint, they can spread disease, and from a physical standpoint, they can cause a lot of irritation.

Aedes
Aedes are the primary carrier for Zika, Yellow Fever, and Dengue Fever. They are aggressive biters and are attracted to darker colors. They are primarily active during the day, and can be identified by the black and white markings on the body and legs.

More About Mosquitoes
- Adult female mosquitoes are responsible for all human bites. Males only feed on nectar and plant juices.
- The life span of a mosquito depends on the species, but usually ranges from one week to one month. Eggs can lay dormant over the winter until conditions are ideal again in the spring.
- Mosquitoes stay within about a mile of their place of birth. They like to hide in shaded areas, such as tall, dense vegetation, trees, and shrubs. Structures such as decks can also provide a place for them to rest and hide.
Preventing Mosquitoes
Standing water is their most common breeding ground. Try to eliminate or properly manage standing water in:
- Bird baths
- Old tires
- Clogged drains
- Buckets
- Gutters full of leaves
- Other things that can hold water for extended periods of time
Mosquitoes are under water during the egg, larva, and pupae stages. The time of progression through all stages depends on species and temperature.
